As we join in celebrating Women’s History Month, we’d thought we’d start by highlighting the history of the celebration itself.
Women’s History Month traces its origins to the first International Women’s Day, which we celebrated last week, and the women’s suffrage movement in the early 1900s to address issues facing women. The day was largely forgotten until the late 1960s, and Women’s History Week began in California and 1978.
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first National Women’s History Month, acknowledging the “achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love of the women who built America” from our nation’s earliest days.
In 1987, the U.S. Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.
Avadian is proud to join in the celebration of Women’s History Month as we honor the specific achievement women have made throughout American and Alabama history.
Throughout the month, we will be sharing the stories of women who have and continue to inspire us.
