From documents and certificates to jewelry and collectibles, we all have things we cherish, need, or value. And we need to keep those things safe from theft or damage.
That’s where a safe deposit box comes in. A safe deposit box is an individually secured container held within a larger safe or vault. At Avadian, they are held within our vaults at Hoover, Colonnade, Dothan West Main, Geneva, Greystone, Homewood, and Huntsville (South Parkway) branches. They are available in the following sizes: 3″ x 5″, 5″ x 5″, 3″ x 10″, 5″ x 10″, and 10″ by 10″. Sizes vary by branch.
So why rent a safe deposit box? We’re glad you asked.
- Safe deposit boxes offer an extra layer of protection against flooding or fire. While a safe deposit box isn’t fireproof and waterproof, they are fire- and water-resistant. So whether you need to protect jewelry or important documents like marriage and birth certificates, Social Security cards, or insurance policies, a safe deposit box helps protect what’s valuable to you.
- Safe deposit boxes protect from theft. Of course, you can buy a safe to put your valuables in at home, but most of the inexpensive safes you could have at your home are easier for would-be thieves to break into. Plus the thief could always just take a smaller in-home safe with them and figure out how to break into it later. A safe deposit box is inside a vault inside a well-secured building.
- Items in a safe deposit box don’t get lost. If not being able to find your birth certificate when you need to get a new driver’s license sounds familiar, a safe deposit box would help. Instead of having to remember which file you put it in and where you put that file, you just have to remember that it’s in the safe deposit box.
- Family members will know where to find important papers. From a will to insurance papers and other similar certificates, your family will know where to find important things should the unthinkable happen. Renting a box jointly with a spouse, child, or trusted friend means someone important to you will have access to your papers. And, it’s also probably a good idea to have a designated power of attorney with access to your box if you need something while traveling or become disabled.
